Saga Volume 4

Saga Volume 4

*****

I have loved the first three installments in the Saga graphic novel series so far and I was dying to get my hands on volume 4.

Volume 4 is fantastic, continuing on the epic story of romance, love, family on an adventure to live.
I cannot mention anything about the actual story without ruining it for the other three books, but rest assured this series continues as it began, adventure, action, love and passion.

I love the artwork by Fiona Staples for Saga and this edition especially is popping with colour, and amusing illustrations to sit with Brian K. Vaughan's story.

I also love the fact that each of the saga volumes have a few pages of extra artwork in the very back of the graphic novels. If you appreciate the artwork then Saga is a series you should definitely check out.

Alex + Ada

Alex + Ada

****

Oh my gosh what a fantastic little graphic novel. I knew nothing about the story before reading this, I picked it up at my local travelling man store as they were showing it off getting people to branch out and read the first volumes of other series.

I had seen it hauled on a couple of videos on Booktube, so the cover stood out to me on the shelves.

The artwork is beautiful, a really simple style to fit alongside the simple story line. The covers from each of the individual comics are shown at the start of the chapters, with more intense colour, layout and themes, which I think is a nice way to lead you in to reading just a little bit more.

Alex is given an android as a gift by a family member hoping the android would make him feel less lonely. Ada arrives as a surprise and Alex takes her in and looks after her. After a few days it is clear to Alex how android-like Ada is, void of humanity and individuality, unable to make a decision.

The Crane Wife

The Crane Wife

***

I loved the last book I read by Patrick Ness 'A Monster Calls', and was eagerly anticipating this book as my first read of 2015. Unfortunately I didn't feel the same love for this story.

The Crane Wife features loneliness and sorrow, new beginnings in love and friendship.
George is a nice guy, possibly too nice, predictable and easy to be taken for granted. By every woman in his life in fact. Then he met Kumiko.

Throughout the novel there are chunks of another story interwoven of the Mountain and the Lady, a fairytale type story based on Japanese Folklore.

I enjoyed this book overall, I think I am just used to reading more YA books recently and was thrown a little with the style of this book.

This is the first book I read on my brand new NOOK e-reader, which I received as a Christmas gift.
I'm so happy to have an e-reader, although I miss the colourful covers I never really re-read books so having all the paper back copies on my shelves seemed a bit of a waste. I love the fact that I can carry around loads of books with me and if I don't get on with a book I can interchange it so easily.
I love the fact that I can shop directly from the e-reader, so much more convenient for me.
I've also been loving the cover/case my mum and I made together, it's made from the cover of an old upholstery book, felt, wadding, bookcase designed fabric for decoration and elastic tabs.
